πŸ™ŒIt's the Friday Call to Worship!πŸ™Œ

If you saw last week's Call to Worship, you might have picked up that I was going into the weekend overwhelmed and undone, capsized by life's chaos. I was also heading into a weekend away for the women's Alpha course I've been leading. It was just seven women, a house in the mountains, and an exorbitant amount of snacks.

I think I ate three weeks of calories in two days and caught up on a year's worth of laughter. Peace-filled silence and open skies recalibrated my soul's rhythms. Time stood still. My nervous system healed.

Everything was spiritual. That's the best way I know how to describe it. The late night laughter, steak dinner, mountain air, and casual conversations were just as spiritual as the Bible studies and worship playlist. Not one thing, but all things together, made me feel whole.. like my whole self put back together.

There's not even a word for "spiritual" in Hebrew, the Old Testament's original language. It wouldn't have made sense to a culture that understood that all parts of life are spiritual. We often think of "spiritual things" as part of an unseen realm or the things we consider "holy". I would be in a disturbing deficit if the only times I encountered God was when I was participating in a "spiritual" activity. Our spirits, and God's Spirit, are present for all parts of life, both the mundane and mystifying.

The term "spiritual" does show up in the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul defines "spiritual" people as the ones who follow Jesus. He means people "animated by the Spirit of God" - and not just at church on Sunday, but in their weekends, workdays, and all the in-betweens. Everything is spiritual. We find healing, wholeness and hope when we acknowledge our loving Father in every part of life.
