Lately, I’ve noticed my thoughts swirling into an all-too-familiar cyclone. The internal storm always starts with, “What if…”
I wonder, "What if” when a deep fear is being realized, I’m weary from waiting, or too many things feel out of control. I catch myself completely caught up in myself. I extrapolate worst case scenarios. It has never brought any semblance of peace.
But something is different now.
This year has been full of unknowns and out of controls. I’ve made it to the other side of one of my biggest fears. I sense I’m standing at the beginning of others. I still fall back to “What if” like a default setting. But I’m no longer wasting my breath on Plan A, B, C or Z. Now, I confidently tell myself that no matter what happens at the end of that “What if’s” ellipses… Jesus is still on the throne. And that is the final, eternal answer. Peace prevails instantly.
What if it doesn’t go well… it doesn’t get better… the prayer doesn’t get answered? What if the worst of the worst case scenarios really does happen? What if there’s no happy ending in this lifetime?
Jesus is still on the throne. And He’s sitting down. (Hebrews 12:2) He’s not worried, and He’s certainly not careless. The scars on his hands prove that.
I can speak this Truth to myself now because I got outside of my head. I started praying more intentionally with a group of women, and they’re praying for me. It’s easier to look up and out when you’re not doing it on your own. (Colossians 3:1)
I will wonder, worry and “What if” again… likely today. But I will answer my own questions. "No matter what happens, Jesus will still be on the throne.”
