The tried and true secret to power.
One of the most valuable currencies in the Ladd family is power. The first thing Wyatt says when he wakes up is, “I have power to play!” When the little boys feel they have eaten enough, they flex their muscles to prove they have sufficiently refueled their power supplies.
We had a BEAUTIFUL morning at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens this morning. We were given a tour of a textiles exhibition, went on a short hike and fished for tadpoles with our bare hands. When it was time to head out, Benjamin’s legs buckled under him and emotion overcame him. His declining capacity cannot keep up with his desires - or his 3-year old brother.
“Mom, I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I just don’t have enough power to make it,” he said in defeat. I leaned in... “Want me to tell you the secret to refueling with God’s power - even if you can’t eat or sleep?” Curious and hopeful eyes danced back at me. “You just start thanking Him, and His power fills you.”
Benjamin, Wyatt and I took turns sharing what we were thankful for all the way back to my van. Benjamin giggled as Wyatt said, “I’m thankful for flowers and MAMA,” every time. He got lighter with every gratitude lifted, and eventually he couldn’t stop the praise from pouring out. As we climbed into the van, I said, “Did you feel it? Did you feel God’s power?” That supernaturally recharged boy grinned, nodded, and just kept thanking God.
There are more days lately that I feel like I don’t know how to parent as the needs of my three sons gape wider and wider apart. I’m going to take notes from Benjamin and start thanking God when I feel defeated and powerless.
